In the past twenty years, tattoos have become more popular among the middle and upper class, permeating new social contexts. Doctors, lawyers and CEO’s participate in the tattoo culture, a community that was previously reserved for lower class groups, such as bikers, sailors, and dock-workers. Among college students with professional aspirations, tattoos and other body art have much less stigma. My research was designed from my love for tattoos and my investment in the budding art form, seeking to examine the college tattoo culture and explain how tattoos have been transformed within a small liberal arts college environment and how that signals a possible shift in mainstream American thought regarding the once taboo form of self-expression.
